Crystal Walter, who goes by the online handle Neoqlassical Art, has lately captured the attention of the internet and sparked some debate with her reimagined illustrations of Disney characters as plus-size princesses.

The artist discussed her project and the various reactions to it openly. She stated that while the majority of people have responded positively, others have accused her of ‘glorifying obesity’ and encouraging unhealthy lifestyles. This was never Crystal’s intention, she explained. Rather, she wished to address the issues of ‘large bodies’ representation and how we should all love ourselves.

“I’ve never told anybody to gain weight or that being fat is preferable to being thin. Simply put, fat lives are equal and as valuable as any other. Our culture is designed to constantly provide means of gaining weight while concurrently living in crippling fear of the outcome and shaming people who do gain weight.” Scroll down to read the rest of in out interview with Crystal, check out her artwork, and leave a comment with your thoughts.

According to the illustrator, her Disney project is all about positive representation. The scarcity of it inspired her to reimagine princesses and provide positive examples for people of various sizes.

“I couldn’t find any productive fat role models in the media when I was growing up.” Fat people have historically been demonized, used for comedic effect, or to show that a character is less intelligent than their slimmer, more cunning counterparts. This is horribly harmful to a child’s development, and it led to me, like many others, despising my own body. “I couldn’t physically relate to the characters I loved, such as the Disney princesses I’ve re-drawn,” Crystal explained her personal experience growing up with a lack of role models.

She described how, as a teen, she formed disturbed eating habits, skipped breakfast, and over exercised   in order to lose a few pounds. However, in her case, the weight always returned, plus more. As a result, Crystal developed severe depression as a young adult. She was exerting and fasting intermittently at the time, but she was miserable and at a low point in her life.

“Realizing that weight and joy do not correlate was the world’s largest wakeup call on my trip to loving my body.” “Weight and life quality do not correlate,” Crystal stated. “In my experience, the size you are when you are living your most joyful, fulfilling life is the size you are meant to be at that time.”

The artist emphasized once more that being thin is not ‘bad’ or ‘unrealistic.’ Instead, she wanted to emphasize the idea that all bodies are deserving of respect and acceptance, regardless of how much space they take up or what they can or cannot do.

“It’s true that the Disney characters I draw were implausible to begin with, in that their waists were all narrower than their heads, but I draw them fat to see myself in them, not to make them ‘realistic.’ To assist other fat people in seeing themselves in them.”

Crystal also decided to share her thoughts on how to address the “obesity epidemic” without shaming people. She believes that the world requires a cultural shift.

“One that provides more nutrient dense options in areas where none exist.” One that promotes fun activities and safe places to do them. One that is more natural and based on kindness. One that encourages larger people to get out and live their lives, not to lose weight, but to thrive just the way they are.”

Overweight people, in Crystal’s opinion, are “just people—not people in waiting” and do not deserve to be laughed at or looked at “with fear, disgust, or pity.”
“Glorifying something that is continuously shamed by the rest of the world is not the same as encouraging more of the same.” It’s simply acknowledging that the event does not make you a bad person or any less of a human being. That doesn’t seem too much to ask.”

In an interview, the artist discussed her passion for art. She stated that she has loved art since she was a child.

“When I was a kid, I used to answer the question, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ with ‘An artist.’ If not that, a rock star would suffice. I had a brief period in 8th grade when I dressed like a boy and imagined myself as a rapper, but didn’t we all? But, through it all, the goal was to be some kind of artist, and guess what? I made it!”

Crystal’s advice to all artists, as well as anyone attempting to be effective in their own field, is to begin with passion.

“Find a cause that is meaningful to you and that people require, and work for it.” If your subject inspires you, it will give you the motivation to keep going even if you aren’t receiving positive feedback or financial compensation. “And never be afraid to ask for what you want; it’s a powerful tool that shames us early in life,” she said.
